Fictional World Project:Fictional World - 5th Grade
Overview: Imagine a country, continent, planet or place that does not already exist. Create maps of the place, then write a description.
Part 1) Make Maps
A. Physical Map - Shows natural features. Examples: oceans, mountains, plains, lakes, rivers, deserts, and forests. Physical maps often use different colors to show changes in elevation.
B. Political Map - Shows human-made things. Examples: borders, countries, states, capitals, and cities. They can also show roads, railroad tracks, important bodies of water, parks, and many other human-made things.
C. Distribution Map - Shows where things are. Examples: population distribution, vegetation, transportation, location of natural resources, weather patterns, rainfall, language, religion, parks, bowling alleys, etc.
All maps include these map essentials:
* Compass Rose
* Map Key that describes symbols and colors used on the map.
* All maps must have color! Please use colored pencils - markers are too messy!
Part 2) Written Description
Write a description of the maps you made. Start with an introduction then describe your three maps. The description of the maps is where you really make your place interesting. Add lots of creative details (see examples on bulletin board). It’s fun to make the extra effort -- add information such as a national anthem, a flag, or information about the economy, wildlife or environment of your place. Make sure you write a conclusion.
Helpful Hints:
Choose a theme -- Work with a topic you like or know a lot about. For example, if you are really into horses you could make your fictional world a place inhabited only by different breeds of horses! Maybe you like baseball; how about a fictional country with states named after teams and players you know (with a government run by the umpires!).
